Alice Massey and Ste-phanie Hardin have assigned both of their classes research projects for this nine weeks on historical events. They are doing the projects because of the new Common Core Standards.

The new curriculum encourages teachers to do projects involving history so students can already begin to learn about these events.

Mrs. Massey’s students have researched the holocaust. They have read “I have Lived a Thousand Years” by Livia Bitton-Jackson and “Milkweed” by Jerry Spinnely.  The students completed a research paper on one of three topics– Jewish ghettos, Joseph Mingle or the Gestapo.

Kylie Flemming said, “The holocaust was one of the most cruel and inhumane events in history.”
Jakiya Flowers said “The holocaust was a horrendous event in history that should have never happened.”
Mrs. Hardin’s 7th graders researched the Vietnam War.  They read a short story called “Zebra.”

Nevaeh Armstrong said, “We learned the Vietnam war started because North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam, so America went to help South Vietnam because we are allies.  It was a very interesting thing to learn about.”
Keasia Hill said, “The Vietnam Memorial is a wonderful way to remember the fallen soldiers.”
