Kalynn McCammon’s fiery red hair isn’t her only trait that distinguishes her from a crowd. The Bruce seventh grader is a budding young artist always looking to create with a pencil in her hand.

Her favorite subject is animals, especially her dog Molly.
“She poses so good and she’s really cute,” Kalynn said.
She has a notebook filled with drawings and has decorated her house with a lot of her art.

“She will draw on anything,” Kalynn’s mother Shaunna McCammon said. “If you can write on it, she’s drawing on it.”

Kalynn prefers to use charcoal pencils most of all while drawing whatever animal that pops in her head.
“I love cheetahs and leopards the best,” she said. “I don’t know why. They just appeal to me.”
Her mother said Kalynn has been fascinated with animals from before she could talk, and her art began as soon as she could hold a pencil.

“She really gets into her drawings,” Shaunna said. “I think she pretends she is the animal. She’s always had a great imagination.”
“Animals are peaceful and really calm,” Kalynn said. “I love that.”

Kalynn took a summer art class from Tina Bennett and is counting down the days until she’s eligible to take the art class offered by the school district.
“I think that will get her excited about going to school,” Shaunna said.

Kalynn acknowledged her favorite time of the school day is when it’s time to go home.
“I don’t really like school,” she said. “I’d rather go home and draw and be with my dog.”
Shaunna said she and husband Tracy have one family dog for daughters Kalynn and Kaley (age 11), but Kalynn is always pushing for more.

“We can’t pass up a dog anywhere that needs help,” Shaunna said. “Kalynn always wants to make sure they have something to eat. I think she’s excited to help Mrs. Rose Wells with her animal shelter project.”

Kalynn thinks she might like to work in a veterinarian’s office one day, but isn’t likely to ever get away from her art.
“I like to draw every day,” Kalynn said. “There’s just something about it. It makes me feel good.”
