The Calhoun City Wildcats will open post season play Thursday, but against who was still in question as of press time.
Coach Josh Miller said it would be Riverside or West Bolivar, but he was still trying to get confirmation from the Delta-based division and MHSAA as of late Tuesday.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 14-7-1 record and earned second in the region after last week’s 6-5 win over Bruce.
Unlike the past few seasons, the first round series is expected to be a Thursday, Friday, Saturday best-of-three with the Wildcats hosting games one and three, if necessary.
Should the Wildcats win the opening series, they are looking at top-seed Baldwyn in the second round – the team they lost to in the North Half semifinals last season.
“We played pretty good in the middle of the season and then we weren’t playing our best at the end of the season,” Miller said. “But to me it’s all about getting hot at the right time, which I think we can do.
We hit the ball well all year long, if our pitching and defense will just get consistent, we have a chance to go pretty far.”
The Wildcats capped off the division schedule with a 6-5 win over the rival Trojans last Tuesday night. Chakel Gates earned the win and Jace Leachman the save.
Bruce jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but the Wildcats rallied to tie in the fourth and then took their first lead in the sixth off an RBI double by Jordan England and an RBI single from Travone Petty.
“We played in an incredibly tough division this year so that should help us come playoffs,” Miller said.
