•Calhoun County Extension Staff invites everyone to their Open House to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the signing of the Smith-Lever Act, which authorized the legislation that created the Cooperative Extension Service. The celebration will be Wednesday, May 7, between 2-6 p.m. for cake and snacks, educational information as well as a look at our facility including a new concession stand. MSU Extension staff and specialists will be on hand to visit and answer any questions.

•QUICK BITES will be Thursday, May 8 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Topic will be Tree Care in the Home Landscape.

•MHV COUNCIL meeting will be Thursday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Everyone is encouraged to attend Council and is welcome to stay for the Tri-Community Homemakers meeting to follow at 6:30 p.m. Attendance for Council is important.

•2 day Boat Safety Class starting Thursday, May 8 from 5-8 p.m. and continuing Friday, May 9 from 5-8 p.m. You must attend both days. The class will be in the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Call 412-3177 for further information.

•BAKE SALE Saturday, May 10 beginning at 8 a.m. at Bruce Piggly Wiggly. All proceeds to go fund a July 4th celebration of music and fireworks on the square, sponsored by Bruce Chamber of Commerce.

•Are My Pines Ready to Thin? will be presented in Houston, Saturday May 10 at 8 a.m. in the Chickasaw County Extension Office. Brief program then outdoors. Wear appropriate clothing for the field, including boots and insect repellent. Return to office for lunch. $10 person. Registration covers refreshments and lunch. Register by May 5 with Chickasaw Extension Office.

•Loosa Schoona Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet Monday May 12, at 2:30 p.m. at Jeffery’s on the Bruce Square. Joe and Millie Goforth will present a program on conservation methods. All Daughters are encouraged to attend this meeting.

•Create Club will meet Monday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building. Program will be “Homemade Soaps, Detergents, and Scrubs.” Call the Extension Office and let us know if you will be attending so that we can have plenty of supplies on hand. We will let you know the amount due for supplies after they are purchased.

•Antioch Agers will meet Tuesday, May 13 at 10:30 am. at Antioch Church in fellowship hall. Linda Haire from Rocky Mount Church will be the speaker and a potluck lunch will follow. All are welcome.

•Yalobusha Historical Society will meet Thursday, May 15, at 2 p.m. in its headquarters, the former Presbyterian Church building in Coffeeville. Speaker is Catherine V. “Ginny” Kilgore. Ginny is the elder law project director for North Mississippi Rural Service, and her topic is on getting your papers in order.

•QUICK BITES will be Thursday, May 15 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Topic will be Basic Landscaping and Mistakes to Avoid.

•VoTER ID PROGRAM…  will be Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Courthouse in Pittsboro. Speaker will be Rita Wray, founder & CEO of Wray Enterprises, Inc., a national independent health care consulting firm. Wray is a nationally recognized consultant/facilitator in the areas of regulatory compliance, risk management, leadership development, organizational effectiveness and strategic planning. The event is sponsored by Calhoun County Republican Women.

•Calhoun saddle club upcoming showdates are May 17, May 31, August 9, August 23, Sept. 13, Sept. 20 and Oct. 11 at the Arena at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Training is at noon and show at 1 p.m. Ranch sorting at each show, entry $25, payback $10 per head.

•Gardener’s Delight and Master Gardeners will meet Monday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Building. Steve Winter, Grenada Extension Agent, will be guest speaker. His topic will be “Animals of Disaster.” Everyone is welcome to attend. MS Master Gardener Conference will be May 20-22 in Oxford. For details and the registration link go to http://lcmga.org/.

•David Murphree Chapter, Mississippi Society Sons of the American Revolution will meet Tuesday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Veracruz Restaurant in Bruce. Speaker will be Max Hipp. Guests and prospective members welcome.

•Pleasant Agers will meet at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Calhoun County Wednesday, May 21. Meet and greet will be at 11:30. Potluck meal at noon. Guest speaker will be Rev. Benny Hill, pastor Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Everyone is invited. The church is four miles west Bruce on CR 231 across the railroad on the left.

•QUICK BITES will be Thursday, May 22 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Topic will be an introduction to the Mississippi Bricks to Clicks Extension Program. From storefront to online sales, businesses can expand their customer base using social media, blogs, websites, mobile apps, etc.

•BHS CLASSES Of 1975-1985 will have a reunion for all ten classes. Event will be Saturday, May 24 at 6 p.m. at the Bruce Museum. Theme is Second Time Around. For info, call Sharon Daniel 983-3699, Ella Stovall 983-2207 or Terry Vanlandingham by April 12 if you plan to attend.

•EXCEL Art on the Square, a new two week summer program developing creative visual art skills, will be June 2-13 on weekdays from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Not an arts and crafts class. Students grades 6-10 apply by registering at Excel. Registration requirements: 1) a self-produced visual art piece (color, sketch, paint, draw); 2) a brief statement of motivation/reason for participating; 3) program fee of $20. Class size limited. Registration deadline is May 27; must include requirements.

•Leader Training will be held at the Multipurpose Building Tuesday, May 27 at 10 a.m. with guest speaker Sheila Freely, Calhoun Economic Development Association Director. Ms. Freely will speak on county economic development. Everyone is welcome.

•QUICK BITES will be Thursday, May 29 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Topic will be Using Color in the Landscape with Dr. Lelia Kelly. Lelia will discuss incorporating color in your landscape plants that will compliment your home’s backdrop, plants that will contrast well in your setting, color palates, and selecting plants to incorporate for special occasions.

•EXCEL Summer School is June 2-26 from 9 a.m.-noon for grades 1-6. Focus: Reading and Math. Mandatory Parent Meeting Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. Cost: $45 for the month. Contact: Sister Judy Sinnwell at 628-5165. Pre-registration now till May 29.

•FREE ADULT BASIC EDUCATION/GED preparation classes are held at Bruce Adult Education Center on Newburger Street. For info, call Ada Armstrong 414-6063 or the center, 983-2038. Classes meet Tuesday &?Thursday. Day, 9-noon, night 5-8 p.m. Counseling 2 Career (C2) for ages 17-21 (out of school) is available. Teachers Ada Armstrong and Margaret Mays.

•BEAVER BOUNTY PROGRAM… Calhoun County Soil Conservation District is administering a beaver control program for landowners in Calhoun County. A $12.50 bounty will be paid for each beaver tail brought in. They must be brought in by landowner, who is required to sign verifying that these were removed from his property in Calhoun and show the site where caught on the map. Maximum number of beaver tails per landowner each year is 40. Trappers may be hired for assistance in beaver removal, but bounty is paid to the landowner. Call 628-8732 ext. 3 for more information.

•DAVIDSON family reunion will be Sunday, June 8, at 10 a.m. at Bruce Community Building. All friends and relatives are invited.

•Biennial Hellums family reunion will be Saturday, June 14 at Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church on CR 885 (Robbs Road) in Pontotoc County. Church opens at 9 a.m., potluck lunch at noon and fellowship following.

•DERMA SCHOOL REUNION… Calhoun County Agricultural High School and Derma School will have a reunion Saturday, July 5 at 1 p.m. at the Multipurpose Bldg. in Pittsboro. More information will be released later.

•BRUCE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1964 will have a 50-year-reunion Saturday, July 12 at Bruce Museum. Contact Rita at 662-983-7185, Sandra 662-414-7138 or Geneva at 662-983-2567.

•DOG LOVERS! LEAGUE FOR NO-KILL SHELTER meets the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Bruce Park Pavilion. For info, call 983-7471.

•CALHOUN ANTIQUE TRACTOR CLUB meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival building. Danny Tutor is club president. For more info, call 682-7594. Everyone is invited.

•ARE YOU A CANCER PATIENT? Calhoun Cares is an ongoing non-profit organization to benefit cancer patients. If you are taking cancer treatments and you live in Calhoun County, you are eligible for assistance. Contact Calhoun Cares, Tammy Tallant, 662-983-0864.

•LOOSA SCHOONA CHAPTER of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet the second Monday of
each month from September through May at Jeffery’s on Bruce Square at 2:30 p.m. Meal is Dutch treat.

•FOSTER/ADOPT PROGRAM… safe and stable families are sought in Calhoun County for foster families. Contact Natalie Bryant at 628-412-3138 for info about the Mississippi Department of Human Services Resource program.
