Public Works Director Perry Goodson submitted his resignation to the Calhoun City Board of Aldermen effective June 30 at their meeting last night. He has been employed with the city for 32 years.
Goodson, who is diabetic, said after the meeting that he is actually retiring. “My doctor told me that it would be in my best interest health wise if I resigned. Removing the stress would improve my health,” he said.
Following a motion to accept the resignation, Alderman Marshall Coleman moved the board go into executive session to discuss personnel as he had not known about the resignation until he saw the agenda.
The mayor said he only received the letter at noon the day of the meeting. The mayor declared it was not necessary to go into executive session as they were only voting on a resignation.
Coleman asked for the matter to be tabled and made a motion not to accept Goodson’s resignation until further review. The motion died for lack of a second.
Chris Lee with the Park and Recreation Board told the mayor and aldermen they would like to see all summer league games played at one location.
One option would be to upgrade the Wyatt and Woody fields and block off the roads during the games for safety reasons. The second option would be to reposition the two fields to be located near the concession stands. He added that they have drawings they can provide reflecting the new field and parking location.
He also said they would like to have year round maintenance on the fields, tennis courts and playgrounds. He suggested a schedule that would include the necessary things for maintenance and offered to make it himself without any cost to the city. The board asked him to firm up their plans and come back at a later date.
Appointed to a city wide planning commission were: Sandra Norman, ward 1; Helen Owens, ward 2; Willie Lairy, ward 3; Justin Nichols, ward 4; and David Hill, ward 5. A code enforcement officer will be hired, Denton said.
On the matter of street repairs, Perry Goodson said they are getting ready to start on Susan Circle. “We will be working other areas while we are putting the culvert down there,” he said. “We are working every chance we get between water leaks and wet ground.”
In other action they reappointed Shane Cook to the Park and Recreation Board; approved Macon Mapping for updating cards and maps and reimbursing Chamber for advertising Spring Fling.
