Calhoun Academy won’t be able to win shootouts this year in MAIS 8-man football. They will have to rely on strong defensive play and a hard-nosed running game. The Cougars will be underdogs for much of the season, but are still taking aim at a playoff spot.
Who’s Back
Offensive starters: 6
Defensive starters: 5
Team Strength
Defense. We have an experienced group of juniors and seniors that understand our system and fly to the football.
Biggest Concern
We don’t have the break away speed we’ve had in the past. We will try and counter that with a solid run game.
Offensive Leaders
Junior Scott Shankle will take over at quarterback for the Cougars this year. He accounted for five touchdowns last year – two passing and three rushing. Senior Joseph Boudreaux is the team’s leading rusher among those returning. Beau Walker will also get lots of carries at fullback.
Defensive Leaders
Junior Beau Walker is among the leading tacklers back on the Cougars defense. Danner Tedder, who led the team in sacks last season, also returns.
Key to Success
We have to learn to play under control, let the game come to us and do the little things right.
