After hitting its lowest mark in six years in April, Calhoun County’s unemployment rate has gradually climbed back above 9% the past few months, according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
Calhoun recorded a 9.3% unemployment rate in July, matching it’s figure in June. That’s up from the 7.9% recorded in April and 8.9% in May.
Calhoun sits in the middle of the surrounding counties with Lafayette the lowest at 7%, followed by Pontotoc 7.7%, Grenada 7.8%, Yalobusha 10%, Chickasaw 11.8% and Webster 12%.
The overall unemployment rate for the state in July was 8.6% and the national rate was 6.5%.
