Calhoun City QB Chakel Gates accounted for three touchdowns as the Wildcats opened the season with a 30-20 win over Coffeeville.
Gates capped a seven-play, 35 yard touchdown drive with a 1-yard scoring run, Jessie Nabors punched in the 2-point conversion for an early 8-0 lead.
Gates connected with Brieton Sykes on a 65-yard touchdown pass in the middle of the second quarter. Micah Moore scored on the 2-point conversion for a 16-0 lead at the half.
Coffeeville cut the lead in half in the middle of the third quarter before Gates added another 1-yard touchdown run.
Big runs by Sykes and Nabors set up the touchdown run for a 23-8 Wildcat lead.
Jadarius Glass scored on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Wildcats in front 30-8.
Coffeeville added two late touchdowns for the 30-20 final.
The Wildcats visit Houston next Friday.
