My mother, Jo Ann Denley, is continuing to improve at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. She has been moved to the rehab part of the hospital which she undergoes physical therapy for most of every day. She fell more than a week ago, fracturing her hip, and had partial hip replacement.

The physical therapy rooms are just that– conducive for the patient and not necessarily visitors. There is a single armchair, among a wheelchair and walker in the room.
Jo Ellen and I got there Friday night with granddaughters Addi Claire and Ellie Kathryn in tow.
Ellie Kathryn sat down in the floor next to the wall and said “Mimi, where’s the couch?”
We are so thankful to all who have called and visited and sent things to my mother. However, she will tell you quickly that her favorite treat so far was brought by her Bruce United Methodist

Lisa McNeece

Pastor Lannis May.
Rev. May picked her up a copy of the Mississippi Mayhem, the Sports Illustrated issue that featured both Ole Miss and MSU on the cover. The magazine had been sold out in many places, but was recently re-stocked. She was thrilled to have one.
Her biggest concern at the hospital Saturday seemed to be if she would be able to watch the Ole Miss-Tennessee game in her room.
With Deanna and family here for the weekend to check up on my mother, we all ended up down at my mother’s house Saturday night to watch the game. We told her we were sorry she couldn’t join us.

If you are looking for an inexpensive outing for your children or grandchildren, head to the Buffalo Park in Tupelo.
Sunday afternoon, Joel and I took Whitney and the granddaughters to the Park and Pumpkin Patch. We had a blast. That was the first trip to the park for Joel and me, and it was so nice– small enough to easily get around, but large enough to have many exotic animals.
The girls’ favorite, by far, was the giraffe. Visitors walk up a flight of stairs, and the giraffe comes over at eye level for a leaf of lettuce. They thought feeding the giraffe was hysterical. He would roll out his long blue-black tongue and twist it around the lettuce leaves.

We saw several varieties of monkeys, a kangaroo, deer, alligator, turtles, mandarin ducks, birds, goats, emu, Scottish highlanders, snakes and so much more. And the weather was perfect. If you go in the heat of the summer, a lot of the animals are inside.
Since we were going to the Pumpkin Patch at the park, we skipped the Bison tour on this trip, but will include that one next time.

Our house in town has had a lot of wildlife this past couple of weeks, too.
In addition to the raccoons in the trees, we have had a turtle (which had to be rescued from our Yellow Lab Jack, who was about to have him for a snack), and a small black snake with white stripes on the patio. Jack wasn’t interested in the snake.

Just a reminder that the deadline to get anything in The Journal is on Monday of the week you want it in the paper. Since we are printing in Olive Branch, we have earlier deadlines.
We don’t mind getting anything early, in fact that gives us more time to spend on it.

Lynn Douglas of Vardaman was this winner of this week’s football contest with a perfect ballot.
Missing one were Larry Shaw of Bruce, Thelma Vardado of Calhoun City, and Amy Bailey of Vardaman.

An article in the Clarion Ledger newspaper Tuesday featured Calhoun native Johnny McPhail and wife Susan who now live in Oxford.
The article was titled “Mississippi Filming: Locals on Screen.”
Johnny was among the cast of the horror movie Starve, which premiered Monday night on the SyFy network.
Last year, Johnny was among the cast of HBO’s True Detective which starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
