Calhoun Academy recently hosted its annual reading fair for grades 4th – 12th. The reading fair was held in the gymnasium on Oct. 28.

The judges had their work cut out for them with all the very appealing boards and talented contestants that were present in the reading fair.
When asking some of the winners that placed in the reading fair questions, they were all very happy to respond. Macey Chrestman is a Sophomore at Calhoun Academy. When asked to tell about her book, she replied, “In the book Home Run by Travis Thrasher, Cory and his brother Clay grew up with an alcoholic, abusive father who would practically throw baseballs at them and they would have to try and hit them. Cory became a professional baseball player, but became an alcoholic and had anger issues. He was sent back home to complete a 12 step rehab program. He turns his life over to God, and is gradually working his way back into his old love and their son’s life.”

Macey enjoyed reading the book Home Run and said, “It’s probably my favorite book now.” She recommends this book to other avid readers because it has a lot of life lessons and things you may go through in your lifetime, and it teaches that God is in control. Her favorite quote from the book is, “Love doesn’t go away. Sometimes it’s just put in a wooden box and hidden away like other valuable things belonging to you. Sometimes it’s lost and forgotten about and never to be found again. But it doesn’t go away.” – Emma Hargrove
Lindsey Hubbard is a senior at Calhoun Academy, and she did her project on the book Endless Love.

When asked questions about her book, she replied, “If you’ve ever seen the movie Endless Love, this is David’s side of the story after they actually grow up, and what they go through for their love. I really enjoyed reading the book in some parts, and other parts were really upsetting to me”, she said, “I recommend this book to girls my age (18) who have ever “loved” a boy. It really opens your eyes about some things.”

When asked, “If you could change one thing in the book, what would that be?”, Lindsey replied, “That David would not have tried so hard to get Jade back and ruined his life.” Her favorite quote from the book was, “It’s too bad for us that our once in a lifetime happened when we were too young to handle it.”

Keely Miranda Wagner is also a senior at Calhoun Academy. Keely’s book was called The Guardian. When asked about her book, Keely stated, “The Guardian is about a girl named Julie who struggles to find love, but eventually finds herself struggling for her life. Her guardian, who is a great dane, saves her life, and shows his true devotion to her by specifying his own.”
Keely also states she really enjoyed reading this book and would recommend this book to other avid readers who would be interested in reading a thrilling, emotional but courageous love story.
