The Bruce Board of Aldermen agreed not to sell some sought after property, finalized a garbage increase and new document copying fees for the public at a brief meeting Tuesday night.

Jim Beckett

Jackson Chapel had inquired about purchasing some city property just north of the church to extend its parking lot. After researching the issue, attorney Jim Beckett advised the board they shouldn’t sell. He explained the city would still be liable for any problems caused by the property because it was once the site of a city sewerage  lagoon.

Beckett also noted the property couldn’t be declared surplus because the city is still using it to dump leaves and debris collected around town. He said it would have to go through an appraisal and bid process to be sold. The board agreed to take no action.

The board officially adopted the change in garbage rate. The city garbage rate was increased $1 to $12.02 to incorporate the $1 increased handed down by the county.

The board also set fees for making copies for the public if it requires research to find the desired document at a minimum $15 and then $7.50 per hour. The copy cost for an easily accessible document is only 25 cents, but the new policy is related to requests for older documents that city workers have to go upstairs in City Hall and search through old stored files that City Clerk Rita Talford said often takes hours to locate.

Board members were also reminded of the 11 a.m. groundbreaking for the new Dog Lovers League facility Thursday, Nov. 20.
