A Vardaman man received more than 40 stitches in his arm after being bitten by a dog Wednesday afternoon.
James Robert Duncan was transported to the hospital for treatment after receiving a severe dog bite to his forearm while assisting a neighbor in catching a potential “vicious” dog.
Vardaman Police Chief Kenneth Scott said the dog, which belongs to James Johnson at 101 Oak Street, was hooked to a chain when a group of children began “aggravating” the dog by throwing sticks at him around noon.
The dog pulled loose from his chain and was chasing the children when Duncan heard the commotion and stepped out of his house.
Scott said Duncan contacted Johnson and they began trying to catch the dog. When the dog got close to Duncan, he reached down and grabbed his collar and the dog then bit him on the arm.
“It was one of the worst dog bites I’ve ever seen,” Scott said. “They had to put a tourniquet on it to control the bleeding.”
Scott said he was having lunch with Sheriff Greg Pollan in Vardaman at the time of the incident and they both responded to the call.
Scott said they were making arrangements for someone from the state to come get the dog for tests due to the fact that its vaccinations were not up to date.
“It will have to be kept for 21 days and then it will be up to the state to decide what happens to the dog,” Scott said.
