An $80,000 grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality will allow the waste tire grant collection program to continue in Calhoun County.
The grant was issued to Three Rivers Solid Waste Management Authority which serves Calhoun, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, and Union counties.
Funding for waste tire grants is provided by a waste tire account funded from a fee charged on the wholesale sale of every new motor vehicle tire sold in Mississippi. This fee provides the funds to ensure and encourage the proper management and disposal of waste tires.
The program has disposed of approximately 675 tons of old tires collected in Calhoun County. A trailer is located at the county’s solid waste department, northwest of the county jail, for citizens to unload old tires.
