Calhoun City Police Chief Benny Langford submitted his resignation of that position effective Sept. 30, 2015 as he will be retiring. Policeman Tito Lopez will become police chief effective Oct. 1. This action was approved at a May 19 special called meeting of the Calhoun City Board of Aldermen.
At their regular meeting last night, they approved a request to issue a purchase order to buy a new fire truck in the amount of $270,000. Cost of the truck will be paid for by RFTAAP grant reimbursement of $70,000, city matching funds of $70,000 from the budget, and the remainder, $130,000, to come from their Fire Truck Escrow Account of Rebate Funds. Delivery of the truck is expected to be early January.
Discussion was held on electrical problems on the square during the city’s SquareFest activities last weekend. A separate 200 amp breaker box just for the gazebo, which is “the biggest problem now,” was mentioned by Lee Burns, and by Larry Bratton, who had some of his own personal sound equipment to be “fried.” After much discussion, the aldermen tabled the matter for this meeting, with plans to investigate further and re-visit it next month.
It was reported by Mayor J.R. Denton that all paperwork is complete for the Small Municipal Grant for sewer repair, but he would like to have the lines smoked again and include pictures to send in with the application.
The board authorized Asst. Police Chief Tito Lopez, Officers Juston Robertson, Wayne Plunk, Latana Williams and part-time officers Kenneth White and Barbara Ward to attend two 8-hours classes in Bruce on commercial vehicle law for patrol officers and commercial vehicle drug interdiction.
