•QUICK BITES Back To School will be Thursday, Aug. 1 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Presenter will be Lynette McDougald, instructor and manager, MSU’s University Florist.

•BENEFIT PROGRAM FOR JESSE & BOBBIE ALLEN who lost everything in a June housefire. Program is Saturday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. at New Birth Baptist Church in Gore Springs. For info or to make donations call Markella Hankins 662-688-5904.

•BIG CREEK SCHOOL reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 3 at Paisley’s Steak House in Big Creek. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with a $9 lunch served at noon.

•BACK TO SCHOOL IMMUNIZATION CLINIC at the Calhoun County Health Department will be Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5-6 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Children ages 4-5 and entering a Mississippi School for the first time are required to be vaccinated. All students entering 7th grade are required to get the Tdap vaccination. CHIP?and Medicaid are accepted. Call the Calhoun County Health Department, 412-3260 for more information.

•CALHOUN ACADEMY has set Meet The Teachers. Date for elementary parents and students Tuesday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. Secondary parents and students meet the teachers will be Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. First day of classes will be Monday, Aug. 12.

•CERTIFIED CPR/BASIC FIRST AID CLASS will be Saturday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. at Bruce Museum. Cost is $8 per person. Twelve open spots, first come first serve on the openings. To register for this class, please contact Carol at the chamber office to have your spot reserved. 662-983-2222.

•GENTIVA HOME HEALTH office staff members will be distributing food collection bags and gathering donations in August for Calhoun Baptist Association as part of the company’s 9th annual Food Drive. Employees at the Calhoun City office will place food collection bags at various healthcare facilities and collect their “harvest” during the  month of August. They are focused on beating last year’s national record, which yielded more than 396,360 pounds of goods for donation to charitable organizations across the country. For info visit www.gentiva.com.

•GOSPEL SINGING on the Bruce Square, will be Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5-7 p.m. by Otha and Linda Geeslin, Independence.

•QUICK BITES Common Plants for Medicinal Use will be Thursday, Aug. 8 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Presenter will be  Lindsay Wilson.

•CHRESTMAN REUNION August 10 at Macedonia fellowship hall. Potluck lunch at noon.

•EXCEL After School Tutoring begins Monday, Aug. 12. Sessions: 3-4:30 p.m. and 4:45-6:15 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Cost: $40 monthly. Must pre-register by Thursday, August 8. •LIFT INC. will hold a Public Hearing Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at Lift Inc., located at 166 Shannon Street in Pittsboro. The purpose of the hearing is to receive input on the needs of the community and information on all programs operated by Lift Inc., LIHEAP, CSBG, WZN and other services provided by Lift will be discussed. •EXCEL After School Program monthly parent meeting, mandatory family attendance, is Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. Family may Pre-register any time by stopping at Excel or calling: 628-5165.

•QUICK BITES The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Shade Gardens will be Thursday,  Aug. 15 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro.  Presenter will be  Dr. Wayne Porter, area extension agent, Lauderdale County, who will talk about challenges of growing plants in the shade.

•VIETNAM VETERANS…if you are interested in attending a recognition luncheon to be planned at a later date, please contact VFW Post 5571 Ladies Auxiliary, 983-2512, 983-7536 or 983-4147.

•BHS CLASS OF 1958 will have their 55th reunion Saturday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Bruce Community Building. Potluck lunch. RSVP to Wanda Longest, 662-983-2505.

•NEW MHV CRAFT CLUB planning meeting will be Monday, Aug. 19, at 5:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Building in Pittsboro. Please come with ideas on times, days, programs, speakers and bring lots of friends. For more information call the Extension Office at 412-3177.

•Pleasant Agers will meet Wednesday, Aug. 21 at Pleasant Grove Baptist. Meet and greet at 11:30. Potluck lunch at noon. Gerald Waldrop, Pontotoc County, will minister in music and song. Pastor Justin Gates invites everyone. The church is west of Bruce on CR 231 across the railroad on the left.

•QUICK BITES Winter Greens: Ornamental or Edible? will be Thursday,  Aug. 22 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro.  Presenter will be Dr. Lelia Kelly.

•DAYNA NORMAN BENEFIT will be Saturday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. at the Big Creek Community Building. Presold Boston butts ($20) and presold T-shirts (youth-3X $10-$13) ready for pick up. Will sell spaghetti plates $6. Auction starts at 6 p.m. with Paul Lowe auctioneer. All Boston Butts and T- shirts must be paid for in advance. •CALHOUN CO. SADDLE CLUB all speed events and roping starting with jackpot barrels. Show dates are August 24, Sept. 14, Sept. 28. Oct. 12 and Oct. 26. •MHV Leader Training will be Tuesday, Aug. 27 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Multipurpose Building. The program will be “Self Defense” with Tito Lopez. Everyone is welcome to attend.
