Highway 9 in Bruce will continue to undergo some major changes in the months ahead with new and expanded businesses and another turn lane.
Cody Weeks recently purchased the former Jenkins’ Farm Supply property and the neighboring shed and land owned by Calvin Yates and intends to move his car dealership, Weeks’ Motors, to that location.
“I’m really excited about it,” Weeks said. “It gives us a lot more highway frontage and more property to do a lot with.”

Weeks is currently renovating the property to get prepared for his business which will open there July 20.
“We’ll be there on the 20th, but the remodeling will still be going on at that time,” Weeks said.
His former property, on the corner of Hwy. 9 and Center Street, will become the new home of the Bank of Okolona that plans to open in Bruce sometime this year.

Bank officials have not yet returned calls seeking more information on their plans, but based on public notices the bank will be opening a temporary location in the existing building on the adjacent corner, next door to Community Finance, while construction of the permanent facility is ongoing.

In addition to Weeks’ property, the bank also acquired the former Boone Tallant house directly behind Dollar General. The house was torn down and removed this past week.
A timetable on the opening of the Bank of Okolona branch was not available.

A new turn lane is also scheduled to be installed on Hwy. 9 sometime this year for Weyerhaeuser.
County Engineer Chodie Myers informed the county supervisors Monday that agreements have been reached on the plans for the turn lane and he anticipates being able to advertise the project for bids in the near future.
“This is all great news for Bruce,” Mayor Rudy Pope said of the changes along Hwy. 9. “We aim to continue working with our local businesses, industry, county and state officials to further enhance the economic viability of our town.”
