One of the highlights of our early summer trip to Jekyll Island was renting bicycles and riding for two days of our stay.
Although it had been more than 30 years since I was on a bicycle, the guy at the rental place encouraged me by saying “You never forget how.”
He was right. One spin around the parking lot, and I was ready to go again.
With Addi Claire riding her bike around, we have been thinking about getting bikes to ride with her.
Joel got mine last week. It’s a plain bicycle, no bells or whistles, no hand brakes, no gears– exactly what I wanted. And I have loved riding it.
It’s easier on the knees than running and the breeze is pretty great right now.
Joel and I have been taking turns, but his arrived yesterday. We have been riding with Addi Claire and finding good flat riding areas in town.
Now if we can get Ellie Kathryn riding, we will be in business. She suggested that I hold her in my lap while I ride the bike. Yeah, right.
Addi Claire and I planted Moonflower seeds beside the patio in May, and we found our first bloom Monday night.
The large white blooms usually open when the sun goes down and have a beautiful fragrance. Addi Claire said it smelled like perfume.
The vine itself is really struggling in this heat. I don’t know how anything can bloom.
After the bitterly long, cold winter we had, I just knew our Sago palm was a goner.
For several years, I moved the plant inside every winter, but it just got too big to move. A couple of years ago, I planted it in the yard where it did pretty well.
Joel and I have been watching it closely this year, hoping for a sprig or any sign of life to emerge. It finally did last week, where there are several fronds coming out.
Son Marshall turned 30 this weekend. Whitney had been planning a surprise birthday party for a couple of months. He had seen a couple of things along the way that gave him a hint of what was coming, but granddaughter Addi Claire, age 6, finished the deal.
Whitney, Marshall and Addi Claire picked Ellie Kathryn up at my house late Thursday night, and were driving home. Whitney reminded Addi Claire that she had a Saturday afternoon birthday party with some of her friends. Addi Claire looked at her puzzled and said “Isn’t that when we are having daddy’s surprise birthday party?”
I thought that was awesome!
The reviews of Harper Lee’s ‘Go Set a Watchman’ haven’t made me want to read it. Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ is one of the best books ever, and I’m afraid it will blemish my love for that book.
I have found that just because I love one of an author’s books, that’s not necessarily the case for others– case in point Gillian Flynn’s ‘Gone Girl.’ That is on my favorite book list (the movie didn’t do it justice), but I have not been able to finish another book by Flynn.
