The Northeast Mississippi Community College softball program continues to gain notoriety for its commitment to excellence in the classroom.
The Tigers finished ninth in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 10 Academic Team rankings in the junior college division with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.39.
It was the second consecutive season for Northeast to receive this prestigious honor. The Tigers were also selected as a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Team for the eighth time in its illustrious history.
Seven individuals from Northeast that retained a GPA of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale were recognized as NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes as well for the 2014-15 school year.
Among those was Genna Grace Edmondson of Vardaman who earned a 3.8 GPA in her inaugural collegiate campaign. She was also among the leaders on the field as one of five Tigers to a hit a home run all year.
Northeast was one of only five affiliates from the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) to make the NFCA’s annual lineup of intellectual programs. The College of Southern Idaho held the largest GPA in the nation at 3.62.
Northeast achieved its tenth winning season all-time last spring. The Tigers also captured a berth to the MACJC State Playoffs for the 14th time in its 15 years since transitioning from slowpitch competition.
Nineteen Northeast athletes have garnered All-American accolades from either the NFCA or NJCAA. The Tigers have claimed seven MACJC North Division championships and one NJCAA Region 23 title as well.
The NFCA is the professional growth organization of fastpitch softball coaches with more than 4,300 members. It facilitates public and professional appreciation of the sport as part of its mission to continue developing the game at all educational levels.
