In November of 1862 General U. S. Grant began the first overland campaign for Vicksburg.
His army had been successful from Forts Henry and Donelson in north Tennessee, down through Shiloh and Corinth, and even to Oxford and Water Valley in Mississippi.
But an ambush stopped Grant in his tracks. The Union loss at Coffeeville helped turn the tide for the Confederacy in the West, leading to a dramatic shift in the Vicksburg Campaign.
