•QUICK BITES will meet Thursday, Oct. 29 at noon at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro. Program will be Fall Pumpkin Planters.

•Calhoun County Soil & Water Conservation District is taking orders for shelled pecans.  The pecans sell for $9 per pound.  To order or for info, stop by their office at 411 South Main St Calhoun City or call 662-682-8732.

•Calhoun City OKTOBERFEST Thursday, Oct 29. starting at 5 p.m. Juniorettes costume contest, trunk-r-treat for age 12-under, jumpers, water balloon toss, hayride, redneck train, 5-K run and costume run/walk sponsored by Cardio Kickboxing. “Win a goldfish!”, water-walking ball, Nazarene Church grilling, cake walk, pep rally at 8. •WANT TO HELP THE LOCAL DOG SHELTER? Bruce Telephone Co. is collecting items for the Dog Lovers League in Bruce this month. Leashes, collars, snacks, dog food, Clorox, Dawn, water hoses, nozzles, dog wormer, dog toys, blankets, tarps and heat lamps can be dropped off at BTC from Monday-Friday through November. Larger items are also needed, but should be dropped off at the shelter. Those items are washer, dryer, air conditioner, heater, refrigerators, commode, sink, insulation, inside walls.

•CALHOUN ACADEMY HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL will be Saturday, Oct. 31 starting at 5 p.m. Silent auction through 7:30 p.m. Live auction at 8 p.m. Games, cake walk, haunted trail and much more. All are invited.

•FALL FESTIVAL... Vardaman School Support Group will host a Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 31, at Vardaman High School from 4-7 p.m. There will be concessions, games, toy walk, cake walk, pony ride, and outside jumpers/slides. Costume contest at 5 p.m. Silent auction will be going on during the festival with a variety of gifts and other items. Haunted house from 4:30-9 p.m.  Kids Hour  where kids can “trick or treat” in the Haunted House without any scaring going on is from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to donate cakes for the cake walk or auction items, please bring them to the high school between noon-3 p.m. on October 31.

•COSSAR STATE PARK ANNUAL HALLOWEEN activities Saturday, Oct. 31 from 7-9:30 p.m.. Games in the Visitor Center, cake walk, haunted trail. Friends of Cossar will have concession stand. Wear your best costume for the costume contest.

•RETIRED TEACHERS will meet Monday, Nov. 2 at Sweet Potato Specialties  at 11 a.m. We will have a guest author to speak to us.

•Annual Holiday Silent Auction, sponsored by FRIENDS of the Jesse Yancy Memorial  Library, will  begin Monday, Nov. 2, and will be on display at the library until December 9.  Anyone with items or services to donate for the auction should get in touch with a FRIEND or the Library Staff.  All proceeds go to the FRIENDS group  to fund family nights, book signings, movies, snacks, and any materials or equipment needed by the library.

•J.D. BROWN MEMORIAL TRAIL RIDE for St. Jude Children’s Hospital November 7 at 10 a.m. Mud Creek Bottom Road (just north of Pontotoc Stockyard). Lunch served following ride. Auction after lunch. Wagons welcome. Hayride available for those without horses. Each $100 donation receives chance to win saddle. Minimum donation $10. No dogs or alcohol. •SWEET POTATO COOKING CONTEST will be Saturday, Nov. 14, during the 42nd annual Sweet Potato Festival in Vardaman. Categories: Cakes, Miscellaneous (Desserts), Men’s, Pies, Miscellaneous (Others), Youth (12-18), Low Calorie, Children (under 12). Mayor’s Cup will be presented at the Banquet Saturday night to the over-all winner. Contest open to the public. Recipe must be original and unpublished. Prepared dish and recipe (without personal information) should be brought to the Vardaman School cafeteria between noon-1 p.m., Nov. 14. Refrigeration is not available. •Holiday Bazaar will be Friday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building. Calhoun County MHV invites all vendors to participate. $10 refundable registration fee. Contact the Extension Office at 412-3177 for information and to request a registration form.

•Bruce Christmas Parade will be Saturday, Dec. 5, at 4:30 p.m. Parade theme will be  “A Fairy Tale Christmas.” Each float/participant can choose which story they want to display.

•FREE ADULT READING AND WRITING HELP... Bruce First Baptist Church is enrolling adults who wish to learn to read or improve their reading ability. Each learner will be matched with their own private tutor for confidential tutoring sessions lasting approximately one hour per week. No charge for the tutoring, but small fee for workbook. All tutors certified by the MS Baptist Literacy Missions Board. For information, call the church office. 662-983-2218.

•DOG?LOVERS! LEAGUE?FOR?NO-KILL?SHELTER meets the first Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the dog shelter on S. Thompson St. For info, call 983-7471.

•DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL station is open in Pittsboro every third Tuesday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the old tax assessor’s office/church building near the entrance to the Multi-Purpose Building on Hwy 9.

•CALHOUN ANTIQUE TRACTOR CLUB meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival building. The club is setting up a senior scholarship fund and has begun fundraising. Danny Tutor is club president. For more info, call 682-7594. Everyone is invited.

•ARE?YOU?A?CANCER?PATIENT? Calhoun Cares is an ongoing non-profit organization to benefit cancer patients. If you are taking cancer treatments and you live in Calhoun County, you are eligible for assistance. Contact Calhoun Cares, Tammy Tallant, 662-983-0864.

•LOOSA SCHOONA CHAPTER of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet the second Monday of
each month from September through May at Jeffery’s on Bruce Square at 2:30 p.m. Meal is Dutch treat.

•CALHOUN CITY AMERICAN LEGION POST #50 and American Legion Auxiliary Post 50 meet the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. Meal at 6:30 p.m.

•WEIGHT?WATCHERS?IN BRUCE meets every Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at Jody’s Dance Studio.

•ANTIOCH LODGE 549... first Monday at 7:30 p.m.

•CALHOUN CITY VFW POST 12032 meets every 4th Thursday at 7 p.m. in the old Kellwood Outlet store building on N. Madison in Calhoun City.

•FREE ADULT BASIC EDUCATION/GED preparation classes are held at the Bruce Adult Education Center on Newburger Ave. Call Ada Armstrong 414-6063 or the center 983-2038. Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday 9- noon, 5-8 p.m. Counseling 2 Career (C2) for ages 17-21 (out of school) available. Teachers are Ada Armstrong and Margaret Mays.
