Nettie Ruth Crocker Hudson, 86, of Ridgeland, (formerly of Calhoun City) died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born October 5, 1929 in Calhoun County, the daughter of Dr. E.W. Crocker and Nettie Brasher Crocker. Her early childhood was spent in Oxford and Memphis, while her father attended medical school at Ole Miss and The University of Tennessee Medical School. She graduated from high school in Calhoun City where her father had established a medical practice. After graduating from Ole Miss in 1951, she began a long and& fruitful career as an English teacher, teaching in Derma, Bruce and ultimately, Calhoun City, where in 1955 she married her high school sweetheart, Roger, and there they built their lives together. She took great pleasure in the teaching of English literature for more than 30 years and later reveled in visiting the haunts of favorite authors, such as Tennyson, Keats, Wordsworth, Yates, and of course, Shakespeare, during her world travels with Roger. Her intellect and lovely disposition were surpassed only by her incredible courage in the face of numerous health problems later in life. When asked about her health, she never failed to smile and say, “I’m fine.”
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Calhoun City, where she enjoyed serving on various committees and teaching both Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of both the New Century Club and the international education honorary society, Kappa Delta Pi. In 1985 she was honored by the Federation of Women’s Clubs as Woman of the Year.
