Former Bruce Trojan Tyrique Armstrong Gunn and Bruce native Benjy Parker will have an opportunity to win a national title this weekend when the Northwest Rangers play in the 8th annual Mississippi Bowl.
The top-ranked Rangers (10-1) will face 2nd-ranked Rochester (Minn.) (11-0) in Mississippi Bowl VIII on Sunday, Dec. 6 in Biloxi for the 2015 NJCAA National Championship. It’ll be the first-ever meeting between the two teams with the game kicking off at 2 p.m. at Biloxi Indian Stadium.
Gunn is a freshman wide receiver for the Rangers. Parker is the team’s defensive coordinator.
Northwest has won a pair of NJCAA Football National Championships in 1982 and 1992 (runner-up 1991) and is playing in its fourth title game. The Rangers are 4-4-1 all-time in bowl games with its last win coming in the 2012 Brazos Valley Bowl (W, 47-36 Kilgore College).
Rochester is 5-18 all-time in bowl games with its last win coming in the 2008 North Star Bowl (W, 19-13 Lackawanna). The Yellowjackets have won a pair of NJCAA Division III National Championships, the most recent in 2007 under former Northwest head coach Brad LaPlante.
