Last Friday was one of the worst weather games I’ve ever covered

I’ve covered a lot of high school football games– cold, hot or wet, or sometimes a combination, but Friday night was one of the worst.

It was a good week to be off as Bruce had an open date.
Linda Jane Ramage and I headed out to Ripley late Friday afternoon for the Calhoun City game. It rained all the way there, at some points so hard you could not see.

I wore shorts, a t-shirt, tennis shoes and socks and took a rain jacket, a set of extra clothes, some flip flops to wear home and an umbrella.

When we got to the field I tip toed around the running water in the ditches and across the sidewalk to keep my shoes from getting soaked. No point in that. By the end of the night, the water on the sidelines was over the tops of my tennis shoes. It literally rained the entire game.

At one point in the 3rd quarter the wind picked up, and I contemplated heading to the vehicle to protect my camera, but then the winds died down and settled into even more rain.
There were more fumbles in the game than you could count and a lot of splashing going on. The field was a mess, but at least it wasn’t cold.

I’m excited about the new “Are You Ready?” cookbook, a project of Ole Miss’s Department of Nutrition and Hospitality Management.
The one the group did back in the late 80s “Rebel Recipes” is one of my all-time favorites. I literally wore one out and bought a replacement. I also gave Marshall a copy for Christmas one year and have bought several for wedding gifts.

Rebel Recipes includes my family’s favorite lasagna recipe  that I make for our Christmas meal.
Charlotte Oakley said they will have a launch for the new cookbook, “Are You Ready?” this Sunday, Sept. 29 from 1-2:30 at Jeffery’s in Bruce. I have already added that to my Christmas wish list.

Oxford Chef John Currence had the featured recipe in People magazine last week.
Currence, owner of City Grocery, Big Bad Breakfast, Snackbar and Lamar Lounge, used his Spicy Chicken Meatballs that he was making for a Nashville Music City Eats festival.

Ottis Crocker of Bruce was the winner of the football contest. He had two misses and won by tiebreaker over Kevin Logan of Bruce and Myles Johnson of Vardaman.
Missing three were Jimmy Tart of Calhoun City; Brook Logan of Bruce; David McCammon of Calhoun City; Jello Chrestman of Bruce; Michael Luker of Randolph.

Several have asked about fall/Halloween festivals planned for the county. These are the ones we know about so far:
•Calhoun Cares Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Multi-Purpose Building in Pittsboro.
•Calhoun City Fall Festival Thursday, Oct. 24 on the Calhoun City Square from 5-8 p.m. CCHS pep rally will be at 7:40 p.m.
•Calhoun Academy Halloween Carnival Saturday, Oct. 26
•Bruce Fall Festival Thursday, Oct. 31 on the square from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

We will have more information on all these events as time draws closer.

With thoughts and  wishes drawing to fall, daylight savings time ends Nov. 3.
Prior to 2007, the time changed in October.
