McCord re-elected school board president; Dana Brasher is district teacher of the year

The Calhoun County School Board re-elected Billy McCord as president; Danny Harrelson, vice-president; Reginald Baskin, secretary, and Paul Moore, board attorney in their meeting last Thursday night. Billy McCord, who was absent due to being hospitalized, participated by phone.

Teachers of the year were recognized and each was presented a plaque: VHS, Anamaria Moore; VES, Jill Caples; Career Center, Heather Pennington; CCHS, John Barnett; CCMS, Stephanie Hardin; CCES, Tonya Tunnell; BES, Ashley Clements; BHS, Beth Gillis. District teacher of the year is  Dana Brasher at BUES.

In the CCHS/MDE monthly progress report, Lillia Jones, Education Specialist Senior with MDE, Jackson, reported that their team was very impressed with what they’d seen at their last visit to CCHS. She stated that Mike Ray, principal, is working very hard, and was confident the school will be fine. Jones also offered her congratulations to John Barnett.

Ray said preliminary test results of practice tests look good. In algebra, of 43 students tested, 49% scored proficient to advanced; in biology, 57% of 63 tested, scored proficient to advanced; of 41 in history, 49% scored proficient to advanced, and 78% of the 54 tested in English scored proficient to advanced. He also reported that in the Accelerated Reader program, 1227 books had been read, and they hoped to increase that number. He listed members of their new parental involvement council: Judy Sinnwell, Betty Holland Stephens, Ada Armstrong, Derrick Hutchins, Marshall Coleman, J.R. Denton, Terry and Lynn Fales, Judy Carnaggio, Travis England and Raven Hawkins. Ray said he and Hutchins would be attending the Parent/Community Involvement Institute at Ole Miss January 24.

Personnel approved were: Billy Eubanks replacing Alex Sargent, James Frizzell replacing Jacob Glasz, Shirley McFarland replacing Angela Long, and Judy Doolittle employed as teacher. Teachers Henry Easley and Tammy Pounds resigned effective May 27, and Lee Tallent, mechanic, resigned December 19, being replaced by Thomas Bradley Cole.

The board entered into executive session for a person to address the board, and no action was taken.

Superintendent’s report: Mike Moore said at the Career and Technical Center, the first class of certified nurse’s aids is complete and all have jobs, and this is the first time for a night class for adult computer literacy.  The BUES roof and Career Center roof have been completed, and said the Reading Fair is Friday. He pointed out some artwork of Calhoun County students on display in boardroom, adding that the “Calhoun County School District’s Gifted Gala” will be Monday, Feb. 17 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Pittsboro Multi-Purpose Building, showcasing products from gifted education students across the school district. Everyone is invited to attend.

Next month’s meeting will be Monday, February 24 at 7 p.m. in the Calhoun County School District Administrative Office.
