Dewitt Spencer

Carl Dewitt Spencer, 71, of Vardaman, died April 21, 2014 at his home. He was born June 19, 1942 in the Elzey community in Vardaman, the son of Thomas Charles and Ludie Annis Loftis Spencer. He was a 1960 graduate of Vardaman High School, a 1965 graduate of the University of Mississippi with a B.S. degree, where he later received his master’s in Special Education in 1967, and his Specialist Degree in 1970, He taught Special Ed in Vardaman, was Title One Coordinator, Superintendent of Education 1992- 2000, and served on the State Mental Health Advisory Board, Communicare Advisory Board 37 plus years. He was Secretary of Calhoun Co. Democratic Party, and was a loyal “Yellow Dog” Democrat. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Vardaman. His funeral service will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Elzey Memorial Chapel with Rev. Wil Howie and Rev. Laura Fairfax officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Curt Alford, Dudley Davis, Charles Herring, Bobby Phillips, Steve Walls, and James Young. Survivors include his wife, Zilla Rose Morgan Spencer, Vardaman; two daughters, Leah Rose Spencer (Laura Fairfax) Pittsboro, NC, and Morgan Spencer (Al) Cutturini, Oxford; one grandson, Logan Mullen, Oxford; special niece; Spencer Moore, Chapel Hill, NC; one sister, Linda Kay Spencer (Jimmy) Moore, Vardaman, and one brother; Dwight Lee Spencer, Greensboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Douglas Spencer.
