Bruce Chamber of Commerce Director Carol Shoemaker announced Monday at the regular meeting of the chamber that she has signed a contract to have The Bouffants perform on Friday night at the Sawmill Festival in July.

She said we were able to secure the popular singing group, who have performed here once before, due to the efforts of merchants, clubs and individuals.

Becky Wright, chamber president, said they hope to start Throw Back Thursdays on May 15, if enough produce is available. “We have been lining up music and activities for the children. People are already asking about it,” she said.

Wright said the Saturday Easter Egg Hunt on the square was highly successful. They registered 175 children, but thought there were some who did not register. Each child was required to have a parent or grandparent with them.

“So that was at least 175 more people and I noticed that they stayed in town after the hunt. That was a good economic development tool,” she said.
“There was also a tremendous group of volunteers.”

Perfect attendance certificates were awarded to Ben Hogan, Bobby Wells, Joel McNeece and Jo Ann Denley.

Carlton Baker

Calhoun County Circuit Clerk Carlton Baker provided the program on voter identification. He reminded the group that the next election is June 3, only 43 days away, when voters will start having to show id to vote.

He said voters may start today voting absentee ballots if they qualify.

Baker said 9,358 are registered to vote in the county and the secretary of state’s office estimates there are only 40 here who do not have voter identification of some sort. “However,” he said, “we (his office) have already provided voter id for 38.”

Voters may use any of the following photo ids:
• a driver’s license
• a photo issued by a branch, department or entity of the State of Mississippi
• a U. S. passport
• a government employee ID card
• a firearms license
• a student photo id issued by an accredited Mississippi university, college or community/junior college
• a U. S. military id
• a tribal photo id
• any other photo id issued by any branch, department, agency or entity of the U. S. government or any state government
• a Mississippi voter identification card

He said expired driver’s licenses may be used if they are no older than 10 years. Anyone who leaves his id at home when he comes to the polls may vote an affidavit ballot.

Baker said that anyone who needs clarification on the matter should call his office.

Dr. Lee Pullen’s dental office is chamber business of the month.
