We continue to hear from more Goar family members. After making the discovery, to me anyway, that the correct spelling of the hill between Bruce and Pittsboro is “Goar,” we have heard from several who thanked us for getting it right.

Joan Goar Bratton, of Oxford, said her father, Arden Goar, came from the Banner area.
And in the Glance in the Past this week under 50 years ago the death of Gilbert Coggins Goar, 69, was announced.

Thursday night, we met newspaper friends for dinner in Oxford. Layne Bruce, of Madison, executive director of Mississippi Press Association; Ray Mosby, editor/publisher of the Deer Creek Pilot in Rolling Fork; Jim Prince, editor/publisher of newspapers in Madison, Philadelphia and Kemper County, Joel and me.

It was a City Grocery kind of night. We enjoyed the meal and being with friends. Not as enjoyable– the sight of Eli Manning on crutches.
We attended a journalism workshop Friday on social media and uses in newspapers. It is always great to be back in the journalism department where my dad taught for many, many years and I graduated.

On my reading list and highly recommended– The Obituary Writer. Younger sister Deanna recommended it to me and I’m glad she did.
The book is the story of two seemingly unconnected women– an obituary writer in the early 1900s whose love disappears in the Great Earthquake of 1906 and a 1960s housewife in an unhappy marriage.

A huge crowd was on the Bruce square Saturday morning for an Easter egg hunt and other activities. There were several hundred attending. The square was divided into quadrants so each age group would have their own egg hunting section. The weather was perfect, too.
We saw a lot of Bruce natives with their children who were home for the Easter weekend like Amber Vaughn Melton, Leah Diestel Husar, Casey Crump LaFoe, Tim and Teena Mayhan Ruth, Jessica Cooper Aguillar, Sasha Glass, Amber Hurst Phelan, Brandon and Amanda Beckett. I’m sure there were many others.
Since our granddaughters were in Missouri, we didn’t do our egg hunting until late Monday afternoon after work. Addi Claire and I took turns hiding and finding eggs in the back yard, while Joel entertained Ellie Kathryn.
Ellie Kathryn’s only interest in the eggs was to put them in the back of her motorized car when she drove by.
After egg hunting, Addi Claire did a little bug hunting– she loves roly polies, butterflies and all sorts of creatures.
She found a roly poly and put it in a small bowl and asked me for water. I suggested she put a little dirt in the bowl instead of water, since the roly poly might drown.
“Grana, they can’t swim because they don’t have any floaties,” she said.
Right.

Individual graduation ads will be available in The Journal this year like we have in the past. Forms will be in next week’s paper

I wish my daddy was here to wear a donkey tie for Dewitt Spencer.
Dewitt passed away early Monday morning. I remember vividly Dewitt and Zilla at my dad’s visitation.
“I’m wearing this tie for your dad,” Dewitt said pointing down to the donkey tie. “We are true Yellow Dog Democrats.”
Yes, they were.
