The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department has two suspects and are expected to file charges later today following an incident last night during which a Derma policeman was shot at.
Sheriff Greg Pollan said Derma policeman Charlie Jackson made a routine traffic stop at the intersection of Enoch and Hamilton streets in Derma when the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.
A search of the vehicle uncovered marijuana.
While Jackson was awaiting a wrecker to come pick up the vehicle, the car’s owner came to the scene and a verbal altercation with Jackson ensued, Pollan said.
The car’s owner then left the scene and a few minutes later several gunshots, reports were five to six, were fired in the direction of Jackson who was still standing near the car. Jackson was not hit by any of the shots, but two of them did hit two houses behind him.
Jackson called for backup and officers with the Calhoun Sheriff’s Dept., Bruce, Calhoun City and Vardaman police departments, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Chickasaw Sheriff’s Department came to the scene.
Pollan said names of the suspects would be released later today when the charges become official.
