A police petty cash fund of $500 was set up at the Bruce Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday night.

Stan Evans

The funds, which will come from city court money, will be used for drug/alcohol buys when they are necessary, according to Chief Stan Evans. A designated officer will be in charge of filling out each request, which will be turned in to City Clerk Rita Talford, for the funds as needed.
Frederick Welch of Big Creek was hired as a water and sewer employee, replacing Joe Collins, effective Dec. 8, and beginning at the rate of $10 an hour.

The board approved taking bids for a side-by-side for spraying ditches, and for a bat wing bushhog.
Marquita Bridges was on the agenda about speed bumps on Clay Street, but was not present at the meeting. Mayor Rudy Pope commented that he personally is not for them because of liability to people’s vehicles. “Clay Street and North McSweyne are the areas of major complaints,” he said, but Evans said several tickets had recently been written in the area.

Funds received from the Booster Club ($2,850) for the difference in  a wooden and wire fence for the BHS softball field will be put into the Bruce Park budget, according to Pope. In miscellaneous action, Pope said Nancy Bennett of Bruce Area Business Owners’ Association had approached him about $200 for some lighted Christmas decorations for two flower beds at the intersection of Hwys. 9 & 32. Alderwoman Ellen Shaw said MDOT officials previously removed decorations placed there and suggested they be contacted first. Request by an individual for reimbursement for a windshield peck repair that occurred while behind a city vehicle hauling dirt and not gravel, was declared to be road hazard and will not be paid by the city.

The meeting was recessed until December 9 at 7:30 p.m., at which time they will open bids for an engineer as required for the ARC Highway 9 Turnbay Project (the turn lane at Weyerhaeuser).
