Hours of operation will change for the Pittsboro Post Office effective Monday, Jan. 12 although county leaders are hoping for an adjustment.
As part of nationwide cutbacks by the U.S. Postal Service, the Pittsboro Post Office will only be open four hours a day – 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – beginning next week.
Shelia Steen will also take over as the new postmaster replacing William Ruth who is retiring.
Calhoun County Tax Assessor Bill Malone told the board of supervisors Monday morning he understands the change to four hours, but was hoping something could be done to have the post office continue to open at its regular time of 7 a.m. Malone explained that by not opening until 9:30 a.m., that could impact courthouse offices.
“I understand small post offices are a burden to them (U.S. Postal Service) but you would think they may make an exception for a county seat,” Board Attorney Sonny Clanton said.
Supervisors agreed to make calls to see if anything could be done to adjust the planned hours of operation for the post office.
