Calhoun City  Board of Aldermen gave approval at their regular meeting last night for Shane Cook, water operator, to purchase a new colorimeter that will test fluoride, phosphate, chlorine and more.

J.R. Denton

Options presented to the board by Cook were for a fluoride tester only at $498 or the tester that they approved, at approximately $1,400, including a warranty. He said that many states have done away with the older testers and the colorimeter is the most accurate.

Cook also presented the board with options on fencing repair/replacement around an elevated tank and well at the Industrial Park. He reported that Turner Shaw can replace the fence that is partially down for $3,150 or back off and square up the present fencing which would provide extra standoff and a double gate for $4,990.
“We can’t afford not to put something up,” he told them, recommending the second option as the better one, but that either would meet  liability requirements.
Alderman Larry Bratton agreed that the second option was best, having the well and tank surrounded by a six foot fence and three-strands of barbed wire. The aldermen approved the second option.

In review of financial reports, Mayor Denton noted that Calhoun City’s sales tax was up $12,000 from last year.
It was also approved by the board for Public Works Director Lee Burns to purchase a new 2-inch water meter for Calhoun City Middle School, which will be ordered immediately.
In  an update on streets, Mayor J.R. Denton said Burns has been filling in potholes and has a new load of cold mix in for more.

Approval was  given for the mayor to officially request the replacement of three street lights taken down during the bridge project at Fred’s and Piggly Wiggly.
The resignation of full-time police officer Josh Hughes was accepted as he is taking a position at the Sheriff’s Department.
“He left on good terms,” said Chief Benny Langford.
Nick Doles and Josh Miller were approved to continue as Park and Rec Activities Operations Director and Activities Administrator.
