A Derma man is in the Calhoun County Jail facing a murder charge following an incident Friday on West Taylor Avenue in Calhoun City.

Randy Anderson, 46, was picked up Saturday night for questioning, Sheriff Greg Pollan said, and was arrested Sunday morning.

“Several people we spoke to during the investigation put Anderson at the scene of the crime on Thursday and earlier in the day on Friday,” Pollan said. “During questioning Sunday morning, he gave us a full confession.”

Pollan said Anderson claimed he went to the home of the victim, 42-year-old William Duff, to attempt to buy drugs.
“Anderson told us he had been using (drugs) off and on and went to get more, but he (Duff) didn’t have any,” Pollan said.

Things escalated between the two men from there and Anderson stabbed Duff  and beat him with a piece of a two-by-four, Pollan said.

The incident was reported to authorities around 4 p.m. Friday when a neighbor walked over to Duff’s home, which is just beyond the south end zone of the Calhoun City football field, to check on him.
“She knocked on the door and it opened and she saw the victim inside and immediately called 911,” Pollan said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Crime Scene Unit out of Jackson joined the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department and Calhoun City Police at the scene Friday night to help gather evidence.

Pollan said Anderson won’t be officially charged with first degree murder until Tuesday morning, due to courthouse offices being closed Monday for a state holiday.
