Vardaman maintenance supervisor Brent Sutherland said approximately a third of residences in Vardaman where they read water meters don’t have proper 911 address posting.
Mayor James Casey said that letters will go out to citizens encouraging them to post the address to help emergency vehicles– such as fire or ambulance– get to their homes quicker.
In another matter, the town set Clean-Up Day for next Saturday, May 16 from 8 am until noon.
Mayor Casey reported that the roof on the Front Porch building had gotten repaired at a cost of $300 less than quote.
He also told with the board he and city clerk Barbara Tedder had been talking to tax assessor Bill Malone about the possibility of the county collecting municipal taxes for Vardaman. Casey said that Derma and Calhoun City had also expressed interest in this.
Atty. Paul Moore said some individuals are paying county taxes and not municipal. By paying at the county, the computer would show that taxes were owed in municipal as well. A portion of the tax would go to the tax collector’s office.
The board also approved permission to advertise delinquent taxes.
Alderwoman Peggy Skinner was not at the meeting.
