The Calhoun City Board of Aldermen set two public hearings for Sept. 3 at their regular meeting last night – one for the purchase of a police car and the other for the proposed budget.
They will hold a hearing to file applications for federal financial assistance from the Rural Development Association to purchase a police car, a matter they considered last year, but delayed, at 10 a.m.
Mayor J. R. Denton said the census data has improved the proportion for the city. The funding ratio is now 45% for the city and 55% for the federal government.
The budget hearing and adoption of the tax levy is set for 6:30 p.m., just prior to the next regular meeting. A special meeting to adopt the budget will be Sept. 9.
The board accepted the low bid of Daniel and Larry Lee to maintain the city’s 15-17 shrubbery beds around town. The main emphasis would be the square. The Lees’ bid was $18.75 per hour, not to exceed $750 per month.
Quality Turf Services of Sardis bid $27 per hour, also not to exceed $750 per month.
In other action the board:
•adopted a contract with the Calhoun City Volunteer Fire Department after having discussed some issues in the contract for several months;
•rejected terrorism coverage in their insurance policy, which would have cost an extra $1,000 per year;
•acknowledged a workman’s comp report on Public Works Director Perry Goodson, who slipped while using city equipment and broke his ankle;
•recessed the meeting to hold a work session on the budget afterwards.
