Calhoun Academy’s Lady Cougars have gotten off to a 2-1 start to the basketball season.
“I think we have a shot to be a pretty good group,” said new head coach Lee Hazelwood, a native of Winona.
The Lady Cougars split two games in the Marshall Academy tournament, defeating Marvell 52-38 and falling to host Marshall 72-30.
Ashley Logan led the Lady Cougars with 20 points, Casey Moss scored 16 and Hunter Robertson 14 in the win over Marvell. Moss scored 20 in the loss to Marshall.
Monday night, the Lady Cougars defeated Sharkey-Issaquena 50-8 at the Washington School Tournament in Greenville. Robertson, Logan and Moss each scored 14 points. Moss hit four threes in the game. She has 13 three-pointers through the first three games.
Hazelwood said he only has five high school players on the roster this year with the loss of Regan Hubbard, who injured her knee at the end of the softball season and will miss all of basketball.
“Regan is a big loss for us,” Hazelwood said. “But our younger girls have stepped up. I’ve been really pleased with the effort so far.”
The Lady Cougars returned to Greenville Tuesday afternoon for another game. They are then off until Nov. 10 when they visit North Delta.
