Pittsboro voters approved beer and liquor Tuesday night, each garnering nearly 70% of the vote.
Beer was approved by a 41-19 vote count. Liquor received one better at 42-18.
A total of 63 votes were cast, equating to 55% turnout of the registered voters in Pittsboro. Three ballots were rejected by the election commissioners.
The Pittsboro board postponed their regular scheduled meeting Tuesday because Town Hall was hosting the election. They will meet next Tuesday, Dec. 9 and begin work on establishing regulations for the sale of beer and alcohol in the county seat.
“I was genuinely surprised by the margin by which it passed,” Pittsboro Mayor Reda Bullard said. “Now the board has a lot of work to do to complete the next steps in the process.”
Pittsboro Board Attorney Ben Suber said the board will have to establish regulations regarding the sale of alcohol in Pittsboro and pass ordinances putting those regulations in place. “I think it took most towns that have approved the sale of alcohol a few weeks or months to get everything implemented,” Suber said. “We will also have to get Tuesday’s results certified by the Secretary of State.”
